Sue Katz, a native Bostonian, has been living and working as a collage artists in The Bahamas for over 36 years. She attended Syracuse University and The Rhode Island School of Design and holds a BFA degree in illustration.
Sue’s art is not about capturing the image purely as is, but more so about creating a mood using color and pattern to obtain the desired effect. For Sue, the creative juxtaposition in using colors that may not necessarily match is what inspires her. She is drawn to using retro imagery for that fact that it represents a fleeting era of simplicity while also being humorous, kitschy and slightly ironic. Her use of vintage material affords her the freedom to experiment with her own past experiences as a child growing up in mid-century America gleaning insight into her own memories. By using this material, Sue creates works which speaks to the importance of family, the thread that runs through us all.
