The Pro Gallery was established on the Oakes Field Campus in 2003 as an incubator space for the creative university community. The Gallery’s mission is to provide an informal environment for exhibitions, critique and dialogue about the creative culture in The Bahamas. The Gallery initially began with the exhibition of works by art majors; however, since its inception the space has housed numerous exhibitions, workshops and seminars for students, alumni, faculty and visiting artists.
The Pro Gallery also serves as the headquarters to UB’s art club, the Pro Society, which manages the space along with art faculty from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
A major collaborator with the Department and the Pro Society is Transforming Spaces, an annual island-wide art tour highlighting the best in contemporary Bahamian visual art. Transforming Spaces was established in 2004 and UB students and Art faculty have been active participants since 2010. The experience of Transforming Spaces provides professional training where students engage on all levels with this week-long event. This engagement includes direct participation in exhibitions as well as curating, promoting and installing exhibitions in the Pro Gallery and in all of the other participating gallery spaces including the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas.
