Since 2021, OCAD University has focused on building creative collaborations with The Bahamas, partnering with I.C.E. (Incubator for Collaborative Expression) and the University of The Bahamas. Led by Professor Ilene Sova and supported by Jennie Suddick, these partnerships have fostered in-person exchanges in Toronto and Nassau. The collaboration aims to explore art movements in The Bahamas and Canada through decolonial practices, sustainability, and community engagement. One key initiative, the “Decolonizing Art from Turtle Island to the Islands of The Bahamas” course in 2022, brought together students, faculty, and Indigenous elders for a two-week residency in Nassau, fostering critical conversations on decolonizing art. In 2024, OCAD will host Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts for a Sacred Spaces Residency, mentoring students in site-specific, interdisciplinary art practices. This ongoing exchange strengthens cultural ties, elevating contemporary art discourse between the regions. The program’s highlight will be showcased at the 2024 FUZE fair.
